I wish I knew more about my maternal grandmother, Loni Oberländer. I wish I knew whether she ever questioned my grandfather's and her own early involvement in the Nazi movement, either at the time, or after the war. I wish I knew how to reconcile my feelings for a loving and caring grandmother with my knowledge of her having been a Nazi.
Θα 'θελα να ήξερα περισσότερα για τη γιαγιά μου από την πλευρά της μητέρας μου, την Loni Oberländer. Θα 'θελα να ήξερα, αν ποτέ αναμετρήθηκε με τη συμμετοχή του παππού μου και τη δική της, από μικρή κιόλας, στον εθνικοσοσιαλισμό, τότε ή έστω μετά τον πόλεμο. Θα 'θελα να ήξερα πώς μπορώ να συμφιλιωθώ με τα αισθήματά μου για μια γλυκιά και στοργική γιαγιά, ξέροντας ότι ήταν ναζί.
Ich wünschte, ich wüsste mehr über meine Großmutter mütterlicherseits, Loni Oberländer. Ich wünschte, ich wüsste, ob sie die frühe Beteiligung meines Großvaters am Nationalsozialismus – und ihre eigene – je hinterfragt hat, damals oder zumindest nach dem Krieg. Ich wünschte, ich wüsste, wie ich meine Gefühle für eine liebende und fürsorgliche Großmutter mit meinem Wissen versöhnen kann, dass sie ein Nazi gewesen war.
